School Engagement

For public to be fully aware of the impact of air pollution on human health, PRAISE-HK has been delivering school talks, workshops and lab visits to broaden students’ social awareness on air quality issues.


1. Education For Smart City

sustainable-dev-airOur mission is to enhance students’ environmental awareness through education and enlist their participation in conserving the environment. To take this forward, we adopt a cross-curricular approach in the promotion of environmental education and promote school-based and action-oriented activities. – Education Bureau

2. Content & Learning Activities


Through school talk, school workshop and lab visit, students from primary to secondary level can learn about the following ideas with adjusted proportion of information according to school preferences:

  • Air Science (Covers key learning area under Science Education)

– What is air pollution?
– Why does it matter?
– How air pollutants form?
– Where to spot air pollution?

  • Environmental Policy (Covers key learning area under Personal, Social and Humanities Education)

– What are the stakeholders?
– What have been done locally and internationally?
– What can we do?

  • Smart City & Technology (Covers key learning area under Technology Education)

– How technology can help tackling air pollution?
– Why technology is critical in terms of exposure science?


Our school engagement activities are targeted for primary and secondary school students. Schools can select the activity format that fits your school calendar and curriculum.  Enrollment are open all year around. Once enrollment form is submitted, our team will get back to you via email within two weeks for confirmation and other arrangements. All activities are free of charge. Schedule is available on a first come first served basis.

1. School Talk

  • Available period: School days – Monday to Friday within school hours
  • Duration: About 45 minutes per session (excluding students’ seating time)
  • Medium of instruction: Cantonese or English
  • Venue: School hall / Activity room with audio & projection equipment
  • Capacity: 100 students or above per session

2. School Workshops

  • Available period: School days – Monday to Friday within school hours
  • Duration: About 45 minutes per session (excluding students’ seating time)
  • Medium of instruction: Cantonese or English
  • Venue: Classroom / Activity room with audio & projection equipment, and devices for students
  • Capacity: 25 students or above per session

Concepts of electronic conversion from sensors to precise air pollution concentration were introduced at the Engineering Lab under Environmental Central Facility.

3. Laboratory Visit

  • Available period: October to January & March to July
  • Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours per session
  • Medium of instruction: Cantonese, English and Mandarin
  • Venue: HKUST Campus
  • Capacity: 25-30 students per session
  • Rundown: Briefing Session -> Lab Visit -> Outdoor Lab Facilities Visit

PRAISE-HK Engagement Team has been engaging primary/secondary school (and universities) teachers, students, and their parents to raise public understanding about air pollution. We collaborated with more than 30 schools to conduct air quality measurements. We also introduced how to use PRAISE-HK APP in future to lower personal exposure hence health risks to air pollution.
